PAC Certificate Course

  • Become PAC certified in three levels of Teepa Snow techniques in our interactive workshop.

Understanding the physical and emotional changes that we experience as we age teaches us empathy. Recognizing that a once high-functioning elder person is now in need of care helps us make this transition easier. We discuss the reversal of roles in families and the need to work together as a team to support the elderly's independence. We talk about the challenges of arriving in a new home, assessing needs, and building a relationship with the client and family.

Caregiving is a noble calling, and we provide insightful approaches to self-care.

  • A: Normal Aging vs. Not Normal Aging

Alzheimer's disease is just one form of dementia; we learn about the symptoms and causes of the most common forms.

We discuss conditions that can increase dementia symptoms, such as UTIs, sleep deprivation & dehydration. Recognizing the different symptoms of dementia helps us support the specific needs of that person.

Normal aging means slowing down a little bit, NOT losing function. You will learn specific changes to be aware of and how to address shifts in ability, as well as how to promote brain fitness.

  • B: Positive Physical Approach & Hand-under-Hand

Teepa Snow’s Positive Physical Approach(TM) teaches us how to engage the person's abilities that remain to help their self-esteem & establish a good relationship. We practice PAC techniques of Hand-under-Hand (TM) to help with dressing, bathing and eating - focusing on ‘working with’ not ‘doing to’ the person.

By focusing on the abilities of each stage, we encourage the person to maintain their dignity and level of independence throughout the disease.

  • C: Different Stages of Dementia (Gems)

We explore the progression of dementia through the traditional 3-stages, combined with Teepa's 'Gems' method which emphasizes the person's abilities more than what they have lost.

As verbal language ability declines, body language & visual cues become increasingly important. We address troublesome behaviors with creative ideas on how to work with the person.

We learn a technique of 'Validation' to correctly hear the person, so that we can help them transition to a more stable emotional place.
